Dusty's coyote got every joint Dusty did, and the Classified set is in stock at $51.99
An animal in a six inch line is usually furniture. It arrives moulded in one piece, it holds the one pose it was tooled in for as long as you own it, and its job is to stand near the figure and make the shelf look busier. Hasbro has been drifting away from that in the Classified Series for a couple of years; Coyote Sandstorm is the clearest case of it yet.
BigBadToyStore has G.I. Joe Classified Series #217 Dusty & Coyote Sandstorm in stock at $51.99, read this afternoon with the cart control live [1]. There is a Substandard tier sitting under it, but that is the same two figures in a scuffed box rather than a cheaper version of them. ToyHypeUSA posted a review of the set the same afternoon, off a sample sent by Entertainment Earth [2].
We covered this wave on 5 October, when Target had five of the autumn releases on the shelf and BigBadToyStore was still taking pre-orders on this one at the same price. That is the part that has moved.
The coyote is a figure
Sandstorm bends at the neck and again at the base of the neck, at every joint in all four legs, and at the tail, and he comes with a second head wearing a different expression and carrying his ears at a different angle [3]. Hasbro’s own box contents list calls him a figure and files the spare head beside him rather than lumping either in with the guns.
Hasbro’s own photography shows what that buys. The coyote is up on his hind legs with his front paws against Dusty’s forearm, and elsewhere he is off the ground mid stride with his back legs trailing behind him; a one piece animal manages the standing pose and nothing after it. The spare head costs a tool of its own, and Hasbro spent it on a second face for the coyote rather than on another accessory for Dusty.

What is in the box, and what one piece of it is called
Hasbro lists eleven things: the Dusty figure, a mask, a hat, a scarf, a backpack, a machine gun, a pistol, a knife, a radio, the Coyote Sandstorm figure and an alternate head [4]. ToyHypeUSA, holding the tray, lists the same run of accessories and calls that ninth piece a silencer for the pistol rather than a radio [2]. In the layout shot it is a short tan cylinder with a flat end, sitting on its own between the coyote and Dusty’s knee, and a photograph will not settle it either way. The box copy is Hasbro’s, so the box copy is what our catalogue carries. The reviewer has a point, though: the vest already has a radio sculpted onto the shoulder, and Hasbro does not usually pack a spare.
One practical note from that review: the soft goods scarf sits over the peg hole in Dusty’s back, so the backpack and the scarf do not go on at the same time [2]. Pick one.
The rest of the figure is the Classified house standard. The vest carries sculpted pouches and a coiled rope slung over the right shoulder, the camouflage is a sand and rust pattern wrapped around both legs, and the thighs have holsters moulded onto them for the pistol and the knife.
Dusty has been here twice already
This is Dusty’s third Classified Series figure. Our archive carries Classified Series #49, the straight single in a helmet and goggles, and a Tiger Force version of him besides, which remains one of the great uses of orange and black! His file card has not moved since 1985: Ronald W. Tadur, corporal, out of Las Vegas, a refrigeration and air conditioning man who went to Fort Bliss and liked it there. Hasbro’s copy for this set reaches for the same idea in fewer words. “None of these things faze Dusty and his Coyote Sandstorm. That’s what they call home.”
What he has not had is the coyote. ToyHypeUSA dates the pairing to a 1991 o-ring figure from the original A Real American Hero run [2], and our own archive has Dusty down for two vintage releases across 1982 to 1994. Sandstorm has sat out every Classified Dusty since, so the set is the first time the two of them have shared a box in this line.
