G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero issue 2 was published by IDW Publishing with a cover date of July 2011 at a cover price of 19.99 USD.

The Joes have been fully reinstated, and they rescue Chuckles, held captive by Cobra agents hiding out in the underground Cobra headquarters’s remains located in the former town of Springfield. Once freed, he’s taken back to the recently reactivated Pit III, the Joes’ underground headquarters, to question Storm Shadow. The Commander doesn’t really care Mindbender knows the Pit III is active again because he wonders what good is that knowledge if they can’t get in, but Baroness tells him the recently brainwashed Snake-eyes can, and the Commander agrees to that plan. As Cobra Commander is in Broca Beach enacting his plan of killing off the Joes in the Pit III, Zartan meets up with the Dreadnoks at their headquarters in New Jersey, wanting them ready when the next opportunity arrives to gain favor. But the Dreadnoks won’t work because they’re starved and demand their usual fare of grape soda and doughnuts before they do anything else. Baroness confronts Lady Jaye while on the Dreadnok’s food run and is captured by her. Billy’s mind has been taken over by Venom’s scanner so he can enact his revenge on Cobra; Destro is aware of this, but Mindbender’s not. The Joes have the Baroness under lock and key in the Pit III, and Destro plans a rescue attempt using Zartan and the Dreadnoks, due to the Commander’s indecisiveness to do so. Mindbender wonders why Billy wants to be subjected willingly to the brainwave scanner so many times, not knowing Dr. Venom’s consciousness inside the machine has taken over Billy. While Storm Shadow goes to free his sword brother Snake-Eyes from Cobra, Snakes attempts to free himself from the scanner’s influence, chasing after Venom’s consciousness inside. Cobra Commander ok’s the attack on PIT III by Dr. Mindbender as a diversion while Destro and the Dreadnoks free the Baroness, as Spirit falls(?) to stop a lone B.A.T. armed w/explosives set to blow up the PIT. Snake-Eyes is freed from the late Dr. Venom’s control by Storm Shadow using the Arashikage mindset, returning his sword brother back to normal (Snake-Eyes failing his own attempt last issue by way of Venom’s actions inside his mind via the scanner), but Billy is still under Venom’s influence. Dr. Mindbender calls for Wild Weasel to do an airstrike on the Pit III, but he’s foiled by Ace. Spirit survived his ‘sacrifice’ vs. the B.A.T. from last issue, as Tunnel Rat and Tripwire search outside the Pit III for any unexploded ordnance during the air battle. Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow confront the Dr. Venom-controlled Billy, and free him from Venom’s influence by placing him under the scanner, and trapping Venom’s virtual consciousness once again inside via an image of Kwinn taking him captive.
