Super7's ReAction+ Wave 10 is in stock, and the S.N.A.K.E. card contradicts the store

Who is inside a S.N.A.K.E.?

Super7 put G.I. Joe ReAction+ Wave 10 on sale on the morning of 19 October, and every figure in it is orderable today. Flint, Shipwreck in a peacoat, the Baroness in her Arctic coat and a S.N.A.K.E. Armor are $25.00 each on Super7’s own store. Buying the whole set costs $100.00, so Super7 offers nothing for taking them together. Big Bad Toy Store undercuts that by a cent a card, and we read all of its listings at about half past one Eastern, every one of them in stock with the add-to-cart control live. The trade press had both the BBTS and the Entertainment Earth listings opening at three o’clock this afternoon, so BBTS opened early, while Entertainment Earth is not carrying these figures at all yet. [1]

The wave also settles a small question this site asked in September and could not answer. When Super7 shipped the Ninja Force Destro and Quick Kick cards, we noted that Target was listing the Ninja Force figures as Wave 11 while Wave 10 had yet to appear anywhere. It turned up this morning, and the assortment numbering runs in order after all.

The S.N.A.K.E. is the reason to look

Three of these are carded 3.8 inch figures on the usual twelve points of articulation, and the fourth is a 4.5 inch suit of Cobra battle armour. Super7 has moulded the rock disguise as panels sitting over the white shell, on the chest, the thighs and the shins, and the back of the suit is finished as a slab of rock face, so from behind you are looking at a boulder with feet. Two of the four arm attachments come fitted and two more swap in; the loose parts are a cone-tipped flame thrower, a finned rocket, a two-pronged retrieval claw and a flat grey stand. Few carded figures at this price arrive with that much in the bag.

Super7 cannot keep its own story straight on who is inside the suit. The product page calls the S.N.A.K.E. “a Destro-engineered robot” and signs off by telling you to send it “shaking in its own transistors”, which makes the machine itself the villain. The file card printed on the back of the card it ships in says the opposite, in the words of the 1980s original. “Designed by DESTRO and his scientists at M.A.R.S. (Military Armament Research System), ‘S.N.A.K.E.’ is a powerful form of battle armor”, it reads, and then, “When captured, G.I. JOEs are placed inside the ‘S.N.A.K.E.’ then its powerful sensors easily brainwash them into thinking and acting like COBRAs!” The pull quote underneath is blunter still. “As long as a person is encased in the S.N.A.K.E. Armor, they are forced to completely obey COBRA.”

The file card is printed on the packaging the figure ships in, so it is the version a buyer actually reads. It is also the grimmer of the two by a distance. A “Destro-engineered robot” is just a machine with a gun arm, but a captured soldier sealed into a crate with his mind scrubbed, sent out to stand in a quarry dressed as a boulder, is the kind of premise the toy-commercial charge against G.I. Joe never accounted for. Hasbro has landed in the same place at the other end of the scale. The M.A.R.S. S.N.A.K.E. Battle Suit is Classified Series #219 at $79.99, built as a cockpit with a hinged entryway so a 6 inch figure can be shut inside it. Somebody is in there.

Shipwreck gets Polly, and the Baroness gets company

Shipwreck’s card and the figure behind it are not wearing the same thing. The art on the blister is the 1985 Shipwreck everyone knows, denim and a sailor cap, while the figure in the tray wears a double-breasted navy peacoat. The side bar reads INCLUDES: ANCHOR, POLLY, and the parrot gets two separate peg accessories so Shipwreck can carry him on the shoulder or on the arm. Two pegs are the more expensive way to do a parrot.

Flint is the straightest figure in the wave, carrying the animated-series deco, a backpack, a holster and a shotgun, and Super7’s own copy puts him in the hot mud of the Joe obstacle course.

The Baroness finishes a set Super7 started without her. Her black coat with the white fur trim comes straight out of G.I. Joe: The Movie, where Cobra spends a good stretch of the picture in the snow, and the two figures she belongs beside have been on the shelf for months already. Arctic Snake Eyes and Arctic Destro are both in stock at BBTS at $21.24 at the time of writing, against the $24.99 the new cards are asking. If you have been waiting for a reason to pick those two up, this is it. [2]

Wave 10 is a sailor with a parrot, a warrant officer with a shotgun, a countess in a fur collar and a brainwashed prisoner welded into a rock. Nobody is going to call that a coherent assortment, but the S.N.A.K.E. is worth the wave on its own.

[1] ToyHypeUSA reported this morning that pre-orders would be “available starting 3pm EST at BigBadToyStore and Entertainment Earth”. BBTS was selling all four as in stock well before that hour. Entertainment Earth returned zero matches on four separate searches for these figures; their Super7 pricing is correct.

[2] The S.N.A.K.E. card back prints the ReAction+ G.I. Joe assortment as a grid of portraits, with Flint, Shipwreck, Baroness (Arctic) and S.N.A.K.E. Armor filling out the bottom row beside Cobra Viper Gunner and Zartan. It also expands M.A.R.S. as Military Armament Research System, where Hasbro’s own Classified packaging says Syndicate.
